Painting's Return to Public
View Prompts Protest
Albuquerque Journal North Edition March
23, 2000 (Diana Heil)
A Catholic Activist has launched a letter-writing
campaign over Santa Fe Community College's decision to put a controversial
artwork back on the wall...
Is it art of is it an attack on Catholicism?
And what does the college do with a gift that sparks endless controversy?...
Against a barren landscape of tree stumps,
a woman on a trapeze and a ballet dancer in a cage gaze toward a gorilla
nailed to a cross. What does it mean?
The answer is in the eye of the beholder.
Catholic activist Jose Villegas was outraged
last year with Steinhoff's gift to the college, and he is outraged again
that the painting is out of the closet, where it had been consigned since
December...
Conclusion to controversy: In the spring of
2001 the Santa Fe Community College returned the painting to Monika Steinhoff. |
